The study of the behaviour of traditional ceramic materials may encounter unexpected difficulties due to the high percentages of natural or synthetic raw materials used in manufacturing processes. Traditional ceramic materials are always obtained from natural raw materials, belonging to four main families: silicates, alumino-silicates, carbonates and oxides. Several are the mineralogical varieties associated to these families and, considering that the majority of natural rocks consists of mineral blends, the number of possible mineralogical compositions is almost unlimited. Surely there is no chance that two body formulations are exactly the same, but this assertion implies that each single formulation has its own specific problems and requires specific studies.
